Self Directed Care

What is Self Directed Care?

Self Direction is a new approach to providing support designed to empower financial decision-making and promote the recovery of people being served by the public mental health system. Through Self Direction, individuals work with Certified Peer Support Specialists (Support Brokers) to create an action plan based on personal wellness goals and to receive funds to spend on selected services that support individualized recovery. Self Direction has proven to be a successful way to empower individuals to have more independence and freedom of choice. Individuals can use Self Direction funds in many ways. A Support Broker works with participants to explore all facets of their lives and to identify the areas in which they would like to activate change. In Michigan, participants can use funds from their individual budget to direct funds toward therapy, groups, case management, community living support, peer services and more.
